The Intellectual Property Committee of WBASNY will address the status of women in this legal specialty. Intellectual property includes patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, and information technology. Despite the advances of the past two decades, women attorneys are still under-represented in the upper ranks of intellectual property practice in law firms.
The problem has shifted from recruiting to retention and promotion.
Even law firms that are aware of the disparity often lack the resources to address it. The IP Committee hopes to educate law firms, corporations, and other institutions about hiring, retaining, and promoting women IP attorneys. This can be accomplished through providing information on actual conditions and best practices in the profession, by gathering statistics and other data, creating written materials, making presentations, and working with other WBASNY committees, chapters, and outside groups that have related missions.
In addition, the IP Committee will consult with WBASNY, particularly the Technology/Internet Committee, on intellectual property aspects of its technology, such as use of content on its website. The Committee also is available to work with other WBASNY committees and chapters on intellectual property issues.
