A Step in the Right Direction for Diversity – Confirmation of Judge Sonia Sotomayor

August 6, 2009. New York, NY.  The Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York (WBASNY) applauds the confirmation by the United States Senate of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme Court.  The confirmation of Judge Sotomayor, a WBASNY member, is not only a source of great pride to our Association, but a benefit to all Americans who are, every day, impacted by the decisions of the nation’s highest court. 

“Whether most citizens realize it or not,” stated WBASNY President Cynthia Schrock Seeley, “all of our lives are impacted in significant ways by the decisions of the United States Supreme Court.  The lifetime appointment of judges to the Court certainly influences society, sometimes for generations.  The confirmation of Judge Sotomayor is a step toward moving the composition of the court to better reflect the composition of our society.  We believe varied perspectives from qualified Supreme Court justices can only strengthen our legal system and the society which Supreme Court decisions so readily influence.”
