Counsel, Justice Program

The Brennan Center for Justice is a non-partisan public policy and law institute that focuses on fundamental issues of democracy and justice. Position: The Justice Program seeks an attorney for its Access to Justice Project to run the Community Oriented Defender Network, partnering with defenders across the country to achieve racial justice policy reforms and to help break the cycle of poverty, arrest and incarceration. The attorney will also work on additional reform initiatives to improve the civil justice system and the criminal justice system. Activities may include guiding policy campaigns, authoring reports, lobbying, litigating and convening conferences. Although the position is located in New York, the Center would consider locating the position in its Washington, D.C. office.

Qualifications:

  • a J.D., at least four years of legal experience (including clerkships, if any)
  • excellent legal research skills, analytical skills, writing skills
  • excellent oral presentation skills
  • litigation experience

            Desired but not required

  • experience as a public defender or civil legal services attorney
  • policy advocacy experience, particularly in the area of criminal justice and racial justice reform
  • experience coordinating public events.

Salary: Commensurate with experience.
