University Associate General Counsel - Commercial Unit (Multiple Positions)

GENERAL DUTIES Provides in-house legal assistance on a wide variety of issues and participates in evaluating and developing University policy related to legal matters.
- Prepares legal documents, and gives legal advice to management and campus executives
- Maintains a caseload as per prescribed procedures
- Reviews contracts, agreements, and other transactions, identifying risks and proposing risk mitigation options
- Assists in negotiating complex transactions and recommends resolutions
- Assists outside counsel and works as a team with other in-house and College attorneys
- Provides legal and policy analysis of issues and participates in developing and drafting policy
- May be assigned to specialize (e.g., construction, commercial and transaction matters, contract negotiation and drafting, compliance, academic policy)
- May supervise non-attorney staff and/or student employees
- Performs related duties as assigned.
CONTRACT TITLE Higher Education Officer FLSA Exempt
CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION The Office of the General Counsel and Senior Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs provides legal counsel to the Board of Trustees, the Chancellor and the University on a wide range of issues. As a member of the Commercial Unit, the University Associate General Counsel provides in-house legal assistance on a broad array of construction, real estate, commercial, transactional and policy matters, as well as contract negotiation and drafting. The position reports to the University Deputy General Counsel.
Other duties will include, but are not limited to the following: - Represents the University, constituent campuses, and CUNY/campus officials in various negotiations, meetings and other venues. - Assists in strategic planning.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS J.D. and five years related experience required. Membership in New York State Bar required.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS - Construction law and public procurement experience (especially with New York State and New York City procurement) - At least three years of experience practicing law - Exceptional writing, oral and interpersonal communication skills - Strong analytical, evaluative, and research skills - Ability to produce results as an individual contributor and as part of a team - Strong organizational skills with the ability to establish plans, manage a large workload and multiple assignments with conflicting priorities and meet strict deadlines in a fast-paced office - Ability to take initiative, use sound judgment to make decisions and exercise discretion and tact - Ability to work effectively, collaboratively, and cooperatively with diverse stakeholders, constituents and clients of various levels - Proficiency using computers and standard office programs (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), and e-mail/scheduling programs (Lotus Notes, Outlook)
COMPENSATION Commensurate with qualifications and experience
