On November 15, 2008, the WBASNY Board of Directors met at the New York State Nurses Association in Latham, New York.  Here are the highlights of that meeting.

 

  • President Boggio attended installation dinners for the Western New York and Finger Lakes Chapters in September.  In October, she attended an awards dinner sponsored by the Onondaga County Bar Association in honor of Karen DeCrow.  In November, she attended the renaming of the Federal Courthouse in White Plains in honor of Judge Bryant, who passed away.
  • She also attended the State of the Judiciary address which was given by Chief Judge Judith Kaye in New York City.  Judge Kaye outlined what she had accomplished to date and what work remains to be done.
  • President Boggio also attended two CLE programs:  the first, given by the Orange-Sullivan Chapter on charitable giving and advising clients with regard to estate planning considerations; the second, one given on behalf of the Adirondack Chapter by Deborah Scalise and Sara Jo Hamilton on Ethics.
  • President Boggio plans on attending a program by the New York State Judicial Institute at the New York City Bar Association featuring a discussion of the process to develop a cost efficient judicial process for the electronic age.
  • On December 16, 2008, WBASNY judicial screening will take place for candidates to the New York State Court of Appeals. 
  • WBASNY has released the press release for the family leave survey. 
  • Ms. Richardson provided the treasurer’s report. 
  • On a motion by Deborah Scalise, seconded by Beth Bryson, it was approved that Hon. Sondra Miller would be the WBASNY nominee for the 2009 Margaret Brent award.  This award is sponsored by American Bar Association and recognizes a woman who has achieved professional excellence in her field; influenced other women to pursue their legal careers; opened doors for women in a variety of job setting that were closed to them; and advanced opportunities for women in a practice area or segment of society.
  •  Convention 2009 co-chairs Natalie Grigg and Kara Lais provided an update. 
  •  Lisa Nororian, co-chair of the CLE Committee, advised everyone to remember that if a program has been done in the past or is similar, new materials need to be resubmitted each time a program is offered in order to get credit.  She also mentioned that there will also be a new policy put into place that no approval will be given pending review by the committee.
  • On a motion by Jessie Aitcheson, seconded by Rachel Kretser, it was approved that the board create a new award in honor of Judith S. Kaye which would honor a WBASNY member who is currently or formerly a member of the federal or state public sector, judicial system, included, but not limited to, support magistrates, law clerks, judges, 18B attorneys, who demonstrate the ideals which Chief Judge Kay exemplified while in office, subject to Judge Kaye’s approval of the use of her name. 
  • Jacqueline Flug presented on behalf of the Reproductive Rights Committee.  Ms. Flug made motion that WBASNY join the Alliance for Women’s Health.  The motion was seconded by Karen Richardson.  The motion was defeated with a vote of 17 in favor and 43 opposed with ten abstentions. 
  • Tracy Catapano-Fox, on behalf of the Working Parents Committee, announced that their January meeting will have representatives from betterbalance.org, which is a group of female lawyers who talk to each other with regard to work/life balance.  Linda Clark advised that the parental leave policy and press release is something that the group is looking to take from the raw data to draft an interesting response or comment and have a substantive article on the press release.
  • Annette Hasipidis, Sandra Ravera, and Margaret Rossi provided a brief update with regard to Legislative Committee. 
  • Sue Moss, Co-Chair of the Matrimonial Committee, announced that her committee will be looking into investigating whether a test case can be made on same sex marriage which could be filed federally and try to bring the issues to the U.S. Supreme Court. 
  • The Education Committee announced that they are working on developing a CLE at convention.
  • On behalf of Nominations, Hon. Marguerite Grays announced that January 12, 2009 would be the deadline for submission of applications for 2008-2009 WBASNY officers.  Interviews will be conducted beginning at 8:30 a.m. on January 31, 2009.
  • President Boggio announced that the amicus brief was unsuccessful in Graev v. Graev.
  • There being no further business, on a motion duly made by Teresa Schiller, seconded by Jody Fay, the board meeting of the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York was adjourned at 1:31 p.m.
