On June 5, 2009, the WBASNY Board of Directors met at the Vintage Inns in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada. Here are the highlights of that meeting.
- President Gail Boggio reported that she attended fourteen events throughout the state on behalf of WBASNY over the past few months.
- President Boggio stated that Treasurer Karen Richardson testified on May 21 at a New York State Senate Judiciary Committee hearing about the importance of diversity in judicial selection for the New York State Court of Appeals.
- President Boggio reported that she recently corresponded about WBASNY issues with the following leaders: U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand; New York State Governor David Paterson’s Chief Counsel Peter Kiernan; New York State Court of Appeals Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman; and New York State Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein.
- President Boggio stated that WBASNY recently added new member benefits to its portfolio: BST valuation, forensic and litigation support services, Energy Plus electricity, and Identify Theft Shield services.
- President Boggio reported that a list of frequently asked questions relating to relocation for parents who currently reside in New York State has been posted on WBASNY’s website for the public’s use.
- President Boggio stated that WBASNY members are updating a report on WBASNY’s history.
- President Boggio reported that WBASNY recently issued two press releases. One related to WBASNY’s support of the Family Health Care Decisions Act in New York State. The other expressed support for President Barack Obama’s nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
- President Boggio stated that WBASNY’s Executive Committee recently convened during two teleconferences. One of the teleconferences resulted in the issuance of a letter to Assemblywoman Weinstein with a memo analyzing pending no-fault divorce legislation. The other teleconference resulted in the designation of a WBASNY representative to attend a meeting hosted by New York State Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith. The purpose of the meeting was to set up a task force to examine matrimonial maintenance guidelines.
- Professional Ethics Co-Chair Deborah Scalise announced that new Rules of Professional Conduct were implemented in New York State on April 1. She said that her committee developed a program about the new rules that has been approved for CLE credit by WBASNY and that already has been presented to eight chapters. She offered to present the program to additional chapters.
