Isolated by Distance But Not Alone: Rural Women & Girls Empowered

March 23, 2018 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

Parallel Event to CSW 62

The theme of this year’s Commission of the Status of Women is “Empowering Rural Women and Girls”. When we consider the challenges facing women and girls living in rural areas, there are two reoccurring themes: Isolation and Limited Choice. These two culprits which affect rural and urban women/girls alike, have for decades rendered women and girls more susceptible to poverty, with fewer professional options, lacking access to vital social services, including legal assistance and vulnerable to domestic violence.
Our panel will highlight the multi-disciplined interventions that have empowered women and girls living without access. From traditional to new ground-breaking initiatives, we bear witness to the resounding collective power of women. To transcend that which we currently perceive as possible we must identify barriers and unconscious biases that hold women back. How we now choose to address these myriad challenges will forever define our generation.
