DESCRIPTION:Immigration Committee \npresents \n\n\nIntroduction and Overview of Selected Criminal-Immigration Issues \n\nDecember 11\, 2024 \n\n6:30 – 7:30 pm \n\nAnyone placed into deportation-removal proceedings should be represented by an attorney experienced in deportation defense; if they have prior arrests and convictions\, that attorney should also be well-versed in the complex interplay between criminal and immigration law. This lecture provides practice pointers for criminal defense counsel representing non-citizens\, as well as for counsel defending non-citizens in deportation removal proceedings. Wholistic representation commences before a client is even placed in those proceedings. Whether a client has legal status in the U.S.\, or lacks that status; whether the client has prior convictions\, or faces criminal charges for the first time; we will review some of the steps that can be taken before their being placed into deportation to prepare them for those proceedings. We will also review important steps to be taken once a client is placed into deportation proceedings. \n  \n \nGeorge A.
