SUMMARY:How to Hire - and Retain - Diverse Lawyers
DESCRIPTION:Western New York \nThe UB Law Alumni Association in conjunction with the Bar Association of Erie County\, the WNY Chapter of the Women’s Bar Association of New York\, and the Minority Bar Association of WNY invite you to a virtual presentation: \nHOW TO HIRE – AND RETAIN – DIVERSE LAWYERS \nFeaturing\nPaulette Brown\, the first woman of color to serve as President of the American Bar Association (2015-2016)\nTuesday\, September 29\, 2020\n6 p.m. to 7 p.m. (EDT)\nQ&A to follow\nRegister here to receive your Zoom invitation\n——————————————— \nBrown is Senior Partner and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer at Locke Lord LLP. She was formerly the president of the National Bar Association. \nA member of the labor & employment practice group of Locke Lord\, she has held a number of positions\, including in-house counsel to several Fortune 500 companies and as a Municipal Court Judge in New Jersey. \nFor the past 30 years\, Brown has engaged in the private practice of law\, focusing on all facets of labor and employment and commercial litigation. She has defended employers in cases involving discrimination on the basis of age\, sex\, marital status\, sexual harassment\, disability\, race and national origin. \nAmong many articles and studies\, she recently co-authored the 2020 American Bar Association (ABA) study “Left Out and Left Behind: The Hurdles\, Hassles\, and Heartaches of Achieving Long-Term Legal Careers for Women of Color.” The study highlights specific challenges unique to the long-term legal careers of women of color because the layer of race compounds gender bias. \nHer numerous accolades include recognition by The National Law Journal as one of “The 50 Most Influential Minority Lawyers in America.” She has been listed as a Super Lawyer since its inception\, and as one of the top 50 women lawyers and one of the top 100 lawyers. She has also repeatedly been named by US News as one of The Best Lawyers in America. \nBrown was educated in Baltimore\, where she attended segregated schools. She earned a B.A. from Howard University and a J.D. from Seton Hall University School of Law.

SUMMARY:Fourth World Conference on Women
DESCRIPTION:The year 2020 marks the 25th  anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing\, China\, and the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995)\, which remains the  most visionary and comprehensive roadmap for advancing women’s rights globally. This year also marks a five-year milestone towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals\, and the reaffirmation of gender equality as inextricably linked to achieving sustainable development for all by 2030. \nTwenty-five years after the adoption of the Beijing Platform for Action\, some progress toward gender equality has been made. Over the past decade\, 131 countries have passed laws to support women’s equality\, including to increase access to health care and good quality education\, and to promote women’s political participation and representation; more countries have reached gender parity in educational enrolment; and fewer women are dying in childbirth. \nYet\, progress has been too slow. Not a single country has achieved gender equality. The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored society’s reliance on women both on the front lines of the response\, and at home\, while the pandemic’s impact is putting at risk the hard-won gains for women’s rights. Women and girls are facing disproportionate impacts with far-reaching consequences across every sphere\, from health to the economy\, security to social protection. \nDue to the pandemic\, it is estimated that in 2021\, 47 million women and girls will be pushed into extreme poverty\, bringing the total to 435 million. By 2021\, for every 100 men aged 25 to 34 living in extreme poverty\, there will be 118 women\, a gap that is expected to increase to 121 women per 100 men by 2030. \nWHAT: On 1 October 2020\, under the theme\, “Accelerating the realization of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls\,” the UN General Assembly will convene a High-Level meeting on the 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women. The High-Level meeting is an opportunity for Member States to demonstrate the political will and leadership to ensure the full\, effective and accelerated implementation of the Platform for Action. Towards this end\, world leaders are invited to present concrete actions and commitments.  The meeting will consist of an opening segment\, a plenary\, and a closing segment. \nWHEN: 1 October 2020\, 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. EDT\nOpening segment \n09:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. (ET) \n\nVolkan Bozkir\, President of the General Assembly at its 75th session;\nAntónio Guterres\, UN Secretary-General;\nRepresentative of China\, host country of the Fourth World Conference on Women;\nPhumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka\, UN Women Executive Director;\nNatalia Kanem\, UNFPA Executive Director;\nHilary Gbedemah\, Chair of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women;\nElizabeth Broderick\, Chair of the Working Group of the Human Rights Council on the issue of discrimination against women in law and in practice;\nDubravka Šimonovic\, Special Rapporteur of the Human Rights Council on violence against women\, its causes and consequences;\nSascha Gabizon\, civil society representative;\nIxchel Adolfo\, young woman leader.\n\nPlenary segment \n10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (EDT) \nHeads of State and Government and other leaders will present concrete actions and commitments to accelerate the realization of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by 2030\, including in support of the role of civil society organizations and youth. \nThe list of speakers can be found here. \nClosing segment \n6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (EDT) \nConcluding remarks by Volkan Bozkir\, President of the UN General Assembly \nWHERE: The High-Level meeting will be webcast live on UN Web TV\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more information\, editorial content and assets\, visit: \nUNGA:  https://www.un.org/pga/75/event/high-level-meeting-on-the-twenty-fifth-anniversary-of-the-fourth-world-conference-on-women/\nUN Women: www.unwomen.org/en/news/in-focus/general-assembly \nThe high-level meeting of the General Assembly will take place in the context of the Generation Equality campaign.  The Generation Equality Forum\, originally scheduled to be held in Mexico City and in Paris in 2020\, is now postponed to next year and is being adapted and strengthened to respond to the current context. \nJoin the conversation: Follow @UN_PGA and @UN_Women on Twitter and share your messages using the hashtag #GenerationEquality\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
