Deirdre L. Hay, (S.J.D.), Esq., Vice President, is a solo practitioner in Ithaca, specializing in antitrust law. She also works at Cornell Law School as Director of LL.M. and International Career Services and New York CLE Coordinator.

Dr. Hay has a law degree from The University of Melbourne, Australia (1989) and a Doctor of Juridical Studies (S.J.D. Univ. Sydney, 2005). Her thesis was published in 2008 by Vandeplas Publishing and is entitled: Unilateral Effects from Mergers of Firms Offering Differentiated Products: Australia and the United States Compared. Her research was in part funded by the Donald McCredie Fellowship which she won in 1996. A presentation of her research to Australia’s competition authority led to the Australian Merger Guidelines being amended.

Dr. Hay was admitted to practice in New York, Third Judicial Department on September 22, 1998 and is also admitted in the Ninth Circuit, the High and Federal Courts of Australia, and the Supreme Courts of Victoria and New South Wales. Prior to starting her own firm, Dr. Hay worked for sixteen years in U.S. law firms, including at Harris Beach PLLC and eight years at Baker & Miller PLLC with former Assistant Attorney General and former Cornell Law Professor, Donald I. Baker. Prior to that, she practiced in electricity deregulation in Washington D.C. at the forerunner of K&L Gates and Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP. She also served for six years at the ABA’s Antitrust Law Journal as Managing Editor and Editor and has written many articles for legal and economic journals.

In 2006, Dr. Hay co-founded the Finger Lakes Chapter of WBASNY and has served on the FLWBA Board as Director/Delegate, President, and Immediate Past President. She built ties with FLWBA and community organizations and hosted FLWBA’s first Meet the Judges event in Ithaca. She has attended WBASNY Board meetings for nine years, six on the Legislative Committee and three on the Executive Committee as FLWBA President, WBASNY Corresponding Secretary, and most recently as Recording Secretary. This past year as Officer Liaison to the International Women’s Rights Committee, she represented WBASNY at the United Nations at the Commission on the Status of Women and League Day. She is a member of NYSBA’s Committee on Legal Education and Admission to the Bar and NYSBA’s Antitrust Law Section and is board member of Ithaca’s Women’s Opportunity Center and Women Building Community.

She has three children, travels when she can, and enjoys designing Venetian beads and jewelry.
