Leadership is not as much determined by your title as by the way you take charge and lead. Remember, no one will take better care of your career than you will. This includes how you self-advocate for case assignments, salary, first chair opportunities and access to talent to support your work. Research shows that women lawyers are at our best when we are negotiating or “asking” for something on behalf of others. That significantly changes, however, when we ask for ourselves. We find ourselves challenged – often not asking at all—and instead, wait to be noticed and justly compensated or awarded for our hard work and excellent performance. Unfortunately, the workplace does not work that way; we must step up.

 

We are operating in a system with a long history of pay inequity and power imbalance, and we are not able on our own to change that. However, if we make our individual voices heard and better advocate for ourselves, we can take our success to the next level and achieve what we want, need and deserve. Focusing on the key elements of negotiation and owning your excellence, we will explore step-by-step methods to negotiate for success.
