GUIDED GROWTH: DEVELOPING A COMMUNITY-BASED SYSTEM OF PREVENTION AND EARLY INTERVENTION FOR FAMILIES AND THEIR CHILDREN AFFECTED BY PRENATAL SUBSTANCE EXPOSURE

Presenters

Dr. Ira Chasnoff, NTI Upstream

Rebecca Davison-March, Esq., Chautauqua County Department of Health & Human Services

Substance use in pregnancy continues to be a significant factor in the morbidity and mortality associated with pregnancy and the newborn. However, the impact on the child continues over their lifespan. These challenges become even greater when racial and socioeconomic bias and inequity go unaddressed. This session will examine the structural and functional changes in the developing fetal brain induced by prenatal substance exposure, demonstrate how these changes ultimately impact learning and behavior in children, and present an evidence-based system of prevention and early intervention that addresses biases and inequities in the health care system and enhances the developmental trajectory of the child.
